1. Who we are

The Article is a personalised weekly news briefing service operated by The Article B.V., based in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. We are subject to the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). If you have questions about this policy, write to us at hello@thearticle.ai.

2. What data we collect

We collect only the data needed to run the service:

  • Email address — to deliver your weekly briefing and send service notifications.
  • Topic preferences — the topics you choose when signing up, used to personalise your briefing.
  • Payment information — processed by Stripe. We never see or store your full card number; Stripe returns only a payment method token.
  • Usage data — anonymised analytics (page views, session duration) via PostHog, to understand how the site is used and improve it.

3. How we use your data

  • Generate and deliver your personalised weekly briefing every Sunday.
  • Send transactional emails (subscription confirmation, payment receipts, service announcements).
  • Process and manage your subscription and payments.
  • Improve the service based on aggregated, anonymised usage patterns.

We do not use your data for advertising, and we do not sell or rent your personal information to third parties.

4. Third-party processors

We share data with the following sub-processors, each bound by their own privacy commitments:

  • Stripe — payment processing. Your payment data is governed by Stripe’s Privacy Policy.
  • Loops — email delivery. Your email address is shared with Loops solely to send your briefing.
  • Supabase — database hosting. Your email and topic preferences are stored in a Supabase-hosted Postgres database in the EU.
  • Anthropic — AI research. Your topic preferences are used to construct research prompts sent to Anthropic’s API. No personally identifiable information beyond topic labels is included in those prompts.
  • PostHog — product analytics. Usage data is anonymised before transmission.

5. Legal basis for processing

Under GDPR, we process your data on the following bases:

  • Contract performance — processing your email and topics to deliver the briefing you signed up for.
  • Legitimate interests — anonymised analytics to improve the service.
  • Legal obligation — retaining payment records as required by Dutch tax law.

6. Data retention

We retain your data for as long as you have an active account. If you unsubscribe, we delete your email address and topic preferences within 30 days. Payment records are retained for seven years as required by Dutch accounting regulations, then permanently deleted.

7. Your rights

As a data subject under GDPR you have the right to:

  • Access — request a copy of the personal data we hold about you.
  • Rectification — ask us to correct inaccurate data.
  • Erasure — ask us to delete your data (right to be forgotten).
  • Portability — receive your data in a structured, machine-readable format.
  • Objection — object to processing based on legitimate interests.
  • Complaint — lodge a complaint with the Dutch Data Protection Authority (Autoriteit Persoonsgegevens) at autoriteitpersoonsgegevens.nl.

To exercise any of these rights, email us at hello@thearticle.ai. We will respond within 30 days.

8. Cookies

We use one first-party session cookie for authentication purposes, and PostHog sets an analytics cookie that is anonymised before any data leaves your browser. We do not use third-party advertising cookies.

9. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. Material changes will be notified by email. The “Last updated” date at the top of this page always reflects the current version.
